Coming to terms with a life-limiting illness is a distressing experience for the person involved and their loved ones. Cotswold Care Hospice offers counselling for carers and patients.
People use a variety of resources to respond to their distress, including their own inner resources and emotional support from family and friends.
For some however, the level and nature of the sadness, worry and or distress is such that they would benefit from professional support.
Counselling offers the opportunity to identify thoughts, feelings and behaviours that are distressing, troubling or perplexing.
Once these reactions are assessed, a person can have a greater sense of self awareness, personal resources and self determined change.
The number of sessions required is determined by the degree of psychological distress, and the individual’s ability to address this at any given time. Sessions last an hour and are in a private and confidential setting.
Anyone can make a referral for counselling. It is possible for patients to refer themselves or for a friend or a relative to refer on their behalf. Health care professionals can also refer people.
