One in three people will develop cancer during their lives. One in seven is affected by lung disease.
These two simple statistics illustrate the huge need for Cotswold Care Hosice and the support we provide.
It has been a year of massive change for us, from moving into our new premises, to expanding our care services to rebranding.
Our slogan - Every day is special - is at the heart of all we do. Our aim is to help people have the best quality of life, regardless of where they are in their journey.
We could not do this without your support. Ninety per cent of our funding comes from the community of Gloucestershire.
You have made a real difference to so many in need - thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
In 2008/2009 you helped us raise £1,831,140. More than 30 per cent was raised through legacies and 29 per cent through our charity shops. Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust provided 10 per cent to the total income. Hospice events raised 10 per cent and general donations seven per cent.
Our total costs for 2008/2009 is £1,553,380. More than 37 per cent of that was spent on day hospice and hospice at home. Thanks to the increase of money raised, we spent more on developing services.
Cotswold Care Hospice has campaigned to raise awareness of the need for improved palliative care in Gloucestershire. We are lobbying government representatives to ensure that the best possible end of life care is properly funded. The charity has worked with media partners to raise awareness of the issue and to encourage public debate.
In 2008/2009 our care team provided more than 9,155 hours of care. We helped more people than ever before. The Hospice at Home team provided 4,350 hours of care. Our outpatient services had more than 1,144 attendees. Our day hospice support 80 people - a 25 per cent increase compared with 2007/2008.
In the past year we have introduced new services including a palliative care consultant clinic and a physiotherapy.
We introduced carer relaxation days to support carers. There has been a 300 per cent increase in the number of carers attending the sessions.
Despite a tough financial climate, our fundraising team celebrated great successes. We opened two new shops, bringing the total to nine. We launched Gift Aid in the shops and have signed up more than 2,000 donors. We have increased our regular givers from 100 to 850 - an increase of more than 700 per cent. Our Cotswold Midnight Walk had a 50 per cent increase in the number of women taking part and we had the biggest ever raffle, selling 14,000 tickets.
As palliative care specialists, we have a duty to share our learning and knowledge. Our education programme acts as a facility to share that learning and improve the everyday lives of people in Gloucestershire. In 2008/2009 we had 1,267 attendees at our training programmes - 863 of those were NHS employees and individuals in the independent sector.
Last year our army of volunteers donated more than 43,427 hours. More than 619 volunteers helped us in all areas of the hospice - in our shops, fundraising, gardening, administration, and in the hospice with patients. It would cost us a minimum of £217,000 a year if we had to pay for the time our volunteers give us.
We could not provide the care to those who need us without the support of our dedicated staff, our volunteers and our thousands of supporters.
A huge thank you to everyone who supports Cotswold Care Hospice - you make a world of difference!
